A children’s book writer, illustrator, and former editor, as well as a member emeritus of the Board of Advisors for the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators, Barbara was a teacher at Bank Street College of Education’s Graduate School, the Writer’s Voice in New York City, and The Institute of Children’s Literature. Barbara founded The Manuscript Workshop and served as its director for twenty-one years.
